Traffic solutions bringing new difficulties in the city

The traffic controlling solutions like concrete barricades and others are worsening traffic chaos in the greater Hyderabad and causing new risks to the motorists.While people are already facing troubles with the closed junctions and new U-turns, now the ready-made dividers used in the middle of the road are becoming a threat to the lives of motorists. Experts say that establishment of these ready-made dividers is against the rules of the Indian Road Congress (IRC). This is due to the height of the dividers, they are taller than the usual height. Traffic officials and GHMC department have taken special steps to control traffic congestions and for the safety of the pedestrians. In this regard, the traffic police have arranged concrete dividers which are of two to three feet in height. These dividers help in controlling the pedestrians from crossing the road wherever they wish and also controls motorists going from the wrong side. But experts are concerned that they are becoming a threat to motorists’ lives.

Dividers of three feet height

According to IRC rules, a divider or a central median should be constructed according to the area of the road. A central median should not be there on the road less than 100 feet wide, only divider should be built on such roads with a limited width and height. But on the 80 feet wide roads of the city, central medians of 4 to 5 feet wide are built and also readymade dividers are set up at 40 to 50 feet wide roads. According to the IRC rules, a divider height should not exceed 45 centimetres. In the past, in the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Urban Development, it is clearly mentioned about how much the height and width of the roads, dividers and footpaths should be in the city. According to that, the dividers height should not exceed 1 feet or 1 ½ feet, but contrary to that in the greater Hyderabad, the dividers placed are of 2 ½ to 3 feet height. These dividers are preferred because they can be easily moved to anywhere, but unfortunately, these dividers are going into the roads with carriage of beeti roads. Due to this, the motorists may get severely injured or lose his life during accidents or road mishaps said one of the transport experts.

These traffic control measures are becoming fatal

In fact, the crash barriers or the dividers are only helpful in controlling the vehicles going to the other side of the road in the wrong route. But these concrete dividers will turn into a threat to the motorist’s life in case of any road mishap. Though the officials are saying that these dividers are being set up to save the lives of the pedestrians, they are neglecting the fact that these are becoming fatal for the motorists. According to the IRC regulations, in the city for every 200 to 250 meters, special arrangements should be made for the pedestrian.There are criticisms that instead of following the IRC regulations, blocking the road is not an appropriate thing to do. According to the rules, on a height of 0.15 meters concrete divider crash barriers or grills should be arranged. Placing a full concrete divider is not a right decisionsaid a transport expert.The GHMC has already started to work on aspects like what kind of design should a divider have? What should be the height of divider / central medians in cities? And the officials are also planning to control the manufacturing of concrete dividers which are not according to the rules. 

Concrete dividers in the median…?

Setting up of the concrete divider in the middle of the road is not a correct option. Due to these dividers, there is an increased risk of mishaps for both pedestrians and motorists. Just like abroad, we should also use glare recovery pads. To avoid pedestrians coming on to the road, crash barriers or grills should be placed. Pedestrian crossing option should be given at every 200 meters.
